PDF Compressor
Compress a PDF with screen, balanced, or printer-quality optimization. Download a smaller PDF when the available server optimizer can reduce its size.
Reduce PDF file size with Ghostscript
The optimizer rewrites PDF objects and image data using Ghostscript PDF settings. Balanced mode suits everyday sharing; smaller-file mode may soften embedded images, while printer mode favors detail. Some PDFs are already optimized and cannot be reduced. The tool reports that result instead of returning a misleading success.
Frequently asked questions
Does PDF compression reduce every file?
No. PDFs that are already optimized or mostly contain vector text may not shrink. If Ghostscript cannot make a smaller file, the tool reports that no reduction was achieved.
Can compression affect image quality?
Yes. The smaller-file preset may downsample or recompress embedded images. Choose printer quality when retaining detail matters, then review the result.
Why does PDF compression upload the document?
This operation runs through Ghostscript on the server. The uploaded PDF is processed in a temporary system directory and removed when the request finishes.
What if compression is unavailable?
The server needs the Ghostscript executable and permission for PHP exec(). If the host blocks either, the page reports the limitation instead of claiming that the PDF was compressed.
